What is the Canadian High School Diploma?

The Canadian Curriculum also called the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is the high school diploma from Canada’s Ontario Province. Accredited by the Ministry of Education – Government of Canada and globally recognised by top universities, the Canadian Curriculum allows seamless integration with national curricula, worldwide. Graduating with the Canadian HS Diploma opens doors to international tertiary education and emigration.

How It Works

The Canadian Curriculum works on a credit-based system. Students must earn a total of 30 credits and pass a Literacy Test to earn their diploma.  Credits can be obtained across four categories:

Ontario Course Credits

Granted when students pass a Canadian Curriculum course

Equivalency Credits

Granted based on the equivalency of courses completed in a student’s CBSE Curriculum. You will earn 8 credits per course from Grades 9 to 11 and 6 credits in Grade 12.

Ontario/National Collaboration Credits

Granted based on the completion of several summative assessments

Challenge Credits

Students outside of Ontario can “challenge” a specific course for credits or obtain them through a Final Exam. Students may earn up to 4 credits with a maximum of 2 credits in any 1 discipline.

Benefits of the Canadian Curriculum

Dual certification

Students opting for the Canadian Curriculum will graduate with a dual high school certification – the local CBSE certificate and the Canadian High School Diploma.

Globally recognised

Students will receive their Canadian diplomas on par with on-campus Canadian students, recognised in the USA, Canada, UK, Singapore, Europe and other countries worldwide.

Mapped to local curriculum

The Canadian Curriculum can be integrated into the local CBSE curriculum. This omits the need for additional classes.

Practical approach

The Canadian Curriculum reflects global concepts and focuses on a competency-based approach to learning – debunking the traditional philosophy of rote memorization while promoting a more practical methodology.

Cost-effective International Education

Since the Canadian Curriculum supplements Crescent English High School’s syllabus, it will cost only a fraction compared to tuition and fees for an international education.

Be registered as a Canadian Student

Students at Crescent English High School while enrolled in Dubai, will receive an Ontario Education Number through the School Information System, linked to the Canadian Ministry of Education. With this step, our students become Canadian students and can proceed with the Canadian Curriculum.

Migration Ready

The globally accredited Canadian HS Diploma can be used for progression into any Undergraduate program in Canada, UK, USA, Singapore, Europe and across the globe.

  • High School in Canada is Grades 9-12. High School Credits are 110 hours each. The hours include independent study as well as in class. Students need 30 credits to graduate. Each class is = 1 credit.
  • For Grades 9-11, students take 8 classes a year and earn 8 credits each year. (We can be flexible for each school and offer equivalency and collaboration credits)
  • For Grade 12, students take 6 classes and students earn their 6 Grade 12 U/M credits. These 6 credits are what Universities look at for acceptance.
  • Once we register a student, they are granted an Ontario Education Number by the Ministry of Education. They become a Canadian student.
  • We can grant Equivalency Credits for students who have already attended secondary school in their home country. We can grant up to 8 credits for Grade 9, up to 8 credits for Grade 10 and up to 8 credits for Grade 11. The number of Equivalency Credits that can be granted depends on the student’s transcript. We follow the Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition to determine.
  • Every student in high school must complete an Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). This is usually taken in Grade 10, but can also be taken in Grade 11 and 12. This is a Ministry Standardized Test and students can complete this at their school in their home country. The school would be trained on how to administer it and mail it back to the Ministry of Education in Ontario.
  • If a student does not pass the test, they will then take a short Ontario Literacy Course (OLC4O). This course will replace the requirement for passing the Literacy Test. Students must attempt the Literacy Test at least once in order to be able to qualify for the Literacy Course.
  • Every student in high school must complete 10 hours of mandatory community service work each year they are an Ontario student. There are many ways for students to achieve these hours. Vineyard Education will guide students and partner schools on how to do so.
  • When students complete all their credits through Equivalency, Collaboration and Ontario Courses + Literacy Test/Course + Community Service Hours, they will be granted an Ontario Secondary School Diploma from the Ministry of Education of Ontario, Canada. This will allow students to apply and be accepted into top universities worldwide.
